Model train scale speed
Time a measured section. Keep every run, then compare your locomotives.

Enter a distance and time to see the equivalent full-size speed.
Manual timing is an estimate. Longer sections and repeated runs help reveal variation.

Calculate a speed and give the locomotive a name. Each saved run keeps its distance, time and scale.
Repeated-run comparison
Each row groups one locomotive, scale, throttle label and direction. Mean and range describe your recorded runs, not measurement accuracy.
Individual runs
From a timed section to a useful comparison
Scale speed multiplies the model’s measured speed by its scale denominator. At HO 1:87.1, one metre in ten seconds is 31.36 scale km/h (19.48 mph). The result describes an equivalent full-size speed; it does not control your locomotive.
Keep the measured section and throttle setting consistent. Record forward and reverse separately, repeat each test, and compare the spread before interpreting a small difference. Read the measuring guide for the method, sources and limitations.
